What is PMS (Premenstrual symptoms):
It is a combination of symptoms which many females get a week before their period. 3 in 4 woman get PMS once in their life time. Most of the times the symptoms are mild like mood swings, headache, bloating or headache but in rare cases they are severe known as PMDD (Pre Menstrual Dysmorphic Disorder). PMS symptoms are due to hormonal changes in body after ovulation. They need treatment only if they are affecting your day to day life.

Females more likely to have PMS are:
1. Having high levels of stress
2. Having family history of depression
3. Having personal history of depression

Symptoms of PMS:
Physical symptoms-
1. Tender breasts
2. Constipation or diarrhoea
3. Bloating
4. Cramping
5. Headache
6. Feeling tired
7. Low tolerance for noise and light

Emotional symptoms of PMS:
1. Irritability
2. Sleep problems
3. Change in appetite
4. Trouble in concentration in work
5. Anxiety
6. Depression
7. Mood swings

Home remedies for PMS:
⦁ Get regular aerobic activity throughout the month.
⦁ Choose healthy food ( high protein diet, less carbohydrates, less oily and spicy food)
⦁ Get enough sleep.
⦁ Try meditation, yoga, try out your hobbies to divert your concentration.

Medical treatment for PMS:
⦁ PMS needs treatment only if it’s disturbing your day to day life.
⦁ It may include hormonal treatment, multivitamin, antidepressant, anti anxiety pills.
⦁ It’s best to consult your doctor first prior to starting any medications.
